From the recording Wild Grace
Lyrics
Hiking the Schoolhouse Trail
Avoiding the poison oak and the bees
I followed my maps and my compass
And studied the shapes of the old pine trees
I cut a path to the pond
Surrounded by cattails, reeds and grass
And there you stood eating sunflower seeds
From your Padre’s cap
It’s a wide open sky
I’m riding the breeze with the leaves and the dragonflies
You showed me the way down to Iron Springs
Where the water runs rusty red
We were trespassing on the old man’s land
Ignoring the signs up ahead
You told me stories bout wild cats
And being lost when the sun goes down
I lay in the grass and watch the heavens spin round
It’s a wide open sky
I’m riding the breeze with the leaves and the dragonflies
We found the old schoolhouse
Leaning like it wanted to fall
We held our breaths and tiptoed
A whisper could have ended it all
We flew out over the canyon
Riding a tire on a 30 foot swing
Gathered up ferns and wildflowers
And tried to remember our dreams
It’s a wide open sky
I’m riding the breeze with the leaves and the dragonflies
